Letter from the Alfaz Del Pi Branch - Pamela Dawson-Tasker.
The AECC was founded in 1953. It is a non-profit-making organisation. There are 2000 branches and 52 Provincial Offices in Spain. The AECC provides: Educational programmes and campaigns to prevent cancer A screening service for early diagnosis Attention to children with cancer Psychological and social attention Palliative Care Units to assist patients at home Holds seminars, courses and conferences Funds research and investigation.
THE L'ALFAS DEL PI branch of AECC is under the direction of Pamela Dawson Tasker and Maribel Torres, and has undertaken a special project to provide a facility for terminal cancer patients of limited resources. Your Association has kindly agreed to support our aims and believes that there is a need for a dedicated unit for palliative care for terminal cancer patients in our area.
In Europe generally such units are known as 'a hospice'. In Spain it has been a long and worthy tradition for seriously ill persons to be cared for by their family members but even that is changing today. For non-Spanish residents it comes as a shock when their terminally ill relative is sent away from hospital to live their last months at home.
Many of these patients have an elderly partner not strong enough to nurse them and many others have no-one at all to care for them. Some have sufficient funds to pay for a private nursing service, some have not. Repatriation for non-Spanish residents is not the answer as an elderly expatriate may have no relatives remaining in his home country and having now made Spain his home wishes to die here.
Through my work as President of the Alfaz del Pi branch of AECC, I have been fortunate enough to raise sufficient funds to commence this special project that is available to residents of the Costa Blanca. This Project entails providing beds for terminally ill cancer patients in this area with full assistance and nursing care given in a specially chosen residencia in Alfaz del Pi. These beds are to be paid for by donations, from the Community, and will be free or subsidised to patients with insufficient financial resources and no-one to care for them or with a partner unable to cope. Respite care is also available.
As well as the Project for terminally ill cancer patients this group gives information and advice to cancer patients and their families. Our close cooperation with other organisations enables us to offer practical help. We also encourage women to go for screening within the programme run by the Provincial Branch in Alicante. We will arrange appointments on request. The screening and our service is free of charge but a donation is always welcome.
The other important activity of our branch is to raise funds to assist the AECC in its work and to continue to build our Project. We have a great deal of support from the community with donations from groups and Associations, for which we are very grateful, and we also support special events that are arranged for us. The support of local residents for these events is necessary to us and also of great importance is the assistance of volunteers. These volunteers can assist by visiting cancer patients, by offering to interpret at hospitals and clinics, or by driving patents to treatment centres, and or, by assisting with vital fund raising.
Please support this valuable cause which has already assisted one of the Association's Members.
Feel free to contact me should you require advice or have a question to ask. Thanks for reading my letter and I look forward to receiving your support.
